The Red River Valley chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (RRVDSA) will be participating in the No Kings rally on Saturday in order to express our disdain for the conduct of the reigning Trump administration. He has exceeded his narrow electoral mandate to pursue policies that enrich himself and, above all, punish institutions that previously or currently oppose his administration. If this political course is not changed, we fear that President Trump will slash social services critical to the working class in order to fund vainglorious military projects and reduce his personal tax burden.
We view the president’s deployment of the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles as a power-grabbing spectacle. As a response to the predictable and reasonable pushback against his policy of illegal and warrantless arrests, detainments, and deportations of students, migrant workers, and immigrant families, President Trump has forced violence upon peaceful protests by deploying the U.S. military against American citizens on the streets of an American city. We have little faith that the president will not seek to create further violence for its own sake in order to expand federal power at the expense of subsidiary authority.
All of President Trump’s actions – from the continued support for the genocide in Palestine, to the gutting and defunding of the federal workforce and services, to every single disastrous spending cut and billionare handout in his “big beautiful bill”, to unleashing gangs of masked ICE and CBP personnel onto our streets to abduct and detain people without due process of law – are assaults on the American working class. As socialists, as Americans, and as people of conscience, we oppose the policies of the Trump administration and stand with all workers to live and work in this county free of persecution or violence at the hands of the state.
Further, as residents of Fargo/Moorhead and Grand Forks/East Grand Forks we will not stand for the treatment of our cities and communities as if they were occupied enemy territory, nor will we standby silently as the arms of state violence, be they ICE, Homeland Security, National Guard, Highway Patrol, or any other militarized agency of the state, are unleashed here at home.
